Seth Grahame-Smith Talks About Just How Weird DARK SHADOWS Will Be

The writer of Tim Burton's gothic soap adaptation warns us this is gonna be strange one.

Seth Grahame-Smith is pretty deep in the Tim Burton game; the director is producing Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, based on Grahame-Smith's novel, the writer is penning an animated movie for Burton, and they're working together on the upcoming Dark Shadows.

Dark Shadows has been something of a mystery; the original show is a flat out weird cult phenomenon, and the images we've seen from set so far have been hard to gauge. Just what is the tone that Burton is going for? What the hell kind of movie IS this?

"The tone of the movie is soap operatic," Grahame-Smith told me last night at an Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter event at the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois. "It's heightened. Everything is heightened and grand. Johnny is just dug in and big. [Starts hamming it up] 'Didn't you see? How... could you? My god, woman!'

"There's an absurdist element to it. It's very funny. I don't think people are expecting it to be as funny as it is."

But not everything is fun and games. The guy who has our 16th president decapitating vampires with a silver axe says there are horror elements in this absurdist gothic soap.

"It's PG-13, so there's not gore, there are no hardcore scares, but there's some crazy Barnabas vampire s**t in this movie that will surprise people in terms of its ferocity."

The film will be out in May. We haven't seen very much from it at all, and I wonder if that's because Warner Bros simply has no idea how to sell these strange and disparate tonal elements. But the weirder this movie sounds the more excited I get for it.

Lo scrittore dell’adattamento cinematografico del telefilm gotico di Tim Burton ci avverte che questo sarà qualcosa di veramente strano.
Seth Grahame-Smith conosce abbastanza profondamente la filosofia di Tim Burton, il regista sta producendo “Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter”, basato sul romanzo di Grahame-Smith, lo sceneggiatore sta scrivendo un film animato per Burton, e stanno lavorando insieme su Dark Shadows, prossimo all’uscita .
Dark Shadows è una specie di mistero, lo show originale è stato uno strano sorprendente fenomeno di culto, e le immagini che abbiamo visto finora dal set sono difficili da valutare.
Ma qual è il tono che Burton vuole imprimergli? Che razza di film è questo?
"Il tono del film è quello della soap opera," Così mi ha detto Grahame-Smith ieri sera ad un evento per “Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter” alla biblioteca/museo Abraham Lincoln di Springfield, Illinois.
"E 'intensificato. Tutto è intensificato e grandioso. Johnny è davvero entrato nel personaggio alla grande.

"C'è un che di assurdo nel film. E 'molto divertente. Io non penso che la gente si aspetti una cosa così divertente"
Ma non tutto è divertimento e giochi. Colui che ha immaginato il nostro sedicesimo presidente che decapita vampiri con una scure d'argento dice che ci sono elementi horror in questa assurda soap opera gotica. "E 'PG-13, quindi non c'è sangue, non ci sono scene pornografiche, ma c'è quel dannato Barnabas, quel pazzo d’un vampiro che in questo film sorprenderà la gente in termini di ferocia". Il film uscirà a maggio. Non abbiamo assolutamente visto quasi nulla, e mi chiedo se è perché la Warner Bros semplicemente non ha la più pallida idea di come vendere quest’opera dai toni più disparati e strani.
Ma più questo film sembra strano e più sono eccitata all’idea di vederlo.
